In 2003, Hideaki Motoki began “ZOUNDS,” a project centering around the theme of an ecosystem of sounds. In it, musical organisms called ZOUNDS not only communicate through sound but also invent an abundant variety of sounds through interaction with the environment and each other, to grow and evolve.

Where it came from
Zounds, a fast-paced word game centered on linguistic dexterity, emerged during the late twentieth century as part of the broader trend of educational parlor games. It was designed to challenge players' vocabularies and quick-thinking abilities, fitting neatly into the era's demand for social games that functioned as both light entertainment and mental exercise.
The game is characterized by its minimalist aesthetic and functional approach to competitive wordplay. It relies on a straightforward system of play that prioritizes rapid pattern recognition and lexical recall over complex board mechanics. Upon its release, it was received as a reliable addition to the competitive family gaming market, favored for its portability and its ability to level the playing field between casual and seasoned wordsmiths.
