Provenance

Where it came from

Zou no Inai Doubutsuen, known in English as The Zoo Without Elephants, was released in 1982 as a poignant animated feature produced by Group TAC. The film is based on a true historical account from the end of the Second World War regarding the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, which was ordered by the military to euthanize its dangerous animals. The narrative centers on the emotional struggle of the zookeepers who were forced to carry out these tragic tasks while attempting to protect the creatures under their care.

Directed by Eiji Okabe, the film reflects the distinct, melancholic style characteristic of Japanese animation from the early 1980s that focused on anti-war themes and moral introspection. By centering the story on the elephants John, Tonky, and Wanly, the filmmakers created a vessel for children and adults alike to process the broader devastation of the conflict. The production was well-regarded for its somber tone and serves as an important cultural artifact documenting how the Japanese film industry sought to educate younger generations about the human and animal cost of wartime survival.
