Zukkoke Sannin-gumi: Zukkoke Jikuu Bouken

Zukkoke Sannin-gumi: Zukkoke Jikuu Bouken was released in 1988 as an original video animation produced by Nippon Columbia. It is based on the enduringly popular children's book series by Masamoto Nasu, which follows the adventures of three distinct schoolboys—Hachibee, Hakase, and Mo-chan. The transition of this long-running literary franchise into the animation format aimed to capture the charm of the original stories while introducing the characters to a broader audience during the height of the 1980s direct-to-video market.

The production sought to balance the humorous, everyday mischief characteristic of the novels with a science-fiction premise involving time travel. Art direction for the project adhered to the established visual identity of the literary series, focusing on a bright, accessible aesthetic intended to resonate with its target audience of elementary school students. While the series as a whole became a staple of Japanese children's literature, this specific animation represents a localized attempt by Nippon Columbia to leverage the franchise's popularity through the emerging medium of home video.
