Zunda Horizon

Zunda Horizon was released in 2017 as a theatrical feature film project centered on the Vocaloid-based character Zundamon and her sisters, collectively known as the Tohoku Zunko project. Produced by the studio WAO World, the film was designed to expand the narrative world of the Tohoku Zunko brand, which was originally conceived as a promotional tool to support the Tohoku region following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The project utilized crowdfunding and grassroots support to gain momentum, eventually finding its way to the big screen as a musical adventure that emphasizes regional pride and the character's unique voice synthesis persona.

The production team, directed by Hiroshi Takeuchi, focused on maintaining the lighthearted and melodic spirit of the Zunko character designs, which were created by illustrator Edomura Ninico. The film’s reception was modest, primarily resonating with a dedicated niche of Vocaloid enthusiasts and supporters of the Tohoku Zunko project. Its design language reflects a blend of traditional anime aesthetics and the specific character branding associated with the Zundamon franchise, serving as a landmark entry in the development of these characters before their later surge in popularity through viral internet memes and video content.
