Zuori Qing Kong

Zuori Qing Kong, released in 2018, is a Chinese animated feature produced by Coloroom Pictures. Adapted from the manhua of the same name by Yu Xiao, the film was conceived as a nostalgic exploration of the burgeoning emotions and academic pressures faced by high school students in a small town in early 2000s China. It is part of a wave of domestic animation aiming to blend photorealistic background art with character designs that evoke the intimacy of youth-oriented graphic novels.

The production sought to contrast the vibrant, fleeting nature of teenage dreams against the rigid structure of the Chinese education system. Directed by Xi Ran, the film was noted for its meticulous visual representation of authentic Chinese streetscapes and school settings. While it received praise for its technical ambition and emotive score, critical reception was mixed regarding the pacing of its narrative, though it remains a significant touchstone for modern Chinese animated drama.
