Azure-rumped Tanager

The Azure-rumped Tanager, scientifically known as Poecilostreptus cabanisi, is a bird of significant ornithological interest due to its extremely restricted range along the Pacific slope of the Sierra Madre in Chiapas, Mexico, and neighboring Guatemala. First described by Philip Sclater in 1868, the species was historically shrouded in mystery, leading to long periods where it was considered potentially extinct or merely a color variant of the more common Blue-gray Tanager. Its classification has shifted over the decades as researchers scrutinized its morphology, particularly its distinctive rounded wing and tail shapes which differentiate it from its relatives.

The bird's visual identity is defined by its subtle, sophisticated plumage, characterized by a striking turquoise-azure rump that contrasts with its otherwise greyish-blue body. Ornithologists often note the design of the bird’s physical form as an evolutionary adaptation to the humid, mid-elevation forest canopy it inhabits. Because of its scarcity and the fragmentation of its montane habitat, the species has become a focal point for conservation efforts, serving as an indicator of the ecological health of the fragmented corridors within the Sierra Madre de Chiapas.
