Barau's Petrel

Barau's Petrel was formally described by ornithologist Christian Jouanin in 1964, though the species had long been known to local residents of Réunion Island as the 'Taha.' It is a gadfly petrel endemic to this single island in the Indian Ocean, where it breeds in high-altitude volcanic cliffs. The species was named in honor of Armand Barau, a local landowner and naturalist who played a critical role in bringing the bird to the attention of the international scientific community.

The bird is characterized by its distinct, graceful soaring flight and a notably pointed tail, adaptations that allow it to traverse vast stretches of the Indian Ocean in search of food. Its design—refined through evolutionary pressure—features a striking dark-gray cap and white underparts, providing effective camouflage against the marine environment. Today, the species is classified as endangered, largely due to light pollution on Réunion which disorients fledglings during their initial journey to the sea, a challenge that has made conservation efforts a central focus for modern ornithologists.
