Parkinson's Petrel

The Parkinson’s petrel, or tāiko, is a gadfly petrel endemic to New Zealand. It was named in honor of Sydney Parkinson, the botanical illustrator who accompanied James Cook on his first voyage of discovery to the South Pacific. The species is historically linked to the Great Barrier Island, where it once nested in vast colonies before being decimated by introduced predators, leading to a precarious conservation status that defines its modern history.

The species is characterized by its dark, chocolate-brown plumage and distinct soaring wing shape, which allows it to traverse vast distances across the Pacific Ocean. Its pointed tail facilitates agile movement in the turbulent winds of its pelagic environment. Ornithologists and conservationists have long studied the bird as a key indicator of maritime ecosystem health, particularly following the successful translocation efforts on Little Barrier Island that sought to protect the species from extinction.
