Gray-faced Petrel

The Gray-faced Petrel, or Pterodroma gouldi, is a gadfly petrel endemic to the North Island of New Zealand and surrounding offshore islands. Historically known as the northern subspecies of the Great-winged Petrel, it was taxonomically reclassified based on distinct morphological and genetic characteristics. The species is deeply embedded in the cultural landscape of the Māori people, who historically harvested the fledglings, known as tītī, as a vital seasonal food source, a practice that continues today under strictly managed regulations.
