Black-chested Mountain Tanager

The Black-chested Mountain Tanager, Cnemathraupis eximia, is a striking member of the Thraupidae family native to the humid montane forests of the northern Andes. Ornithologically categorized within the tanager group, it was formally described by the French naturalist Boissonneau in 1840. Its evolution is characterized by a specialized adaptation to high-altitude ecosystems, thriving in the dense, fog-laden canopy where its rounded wing shape facilitates maneuverability through tangled vegetation.

The species is distinguished by its vibrant, contrasting plumage, which serves as a biological signature within its localized habitat across Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. The rounded tail and broad wing structure are design features common to many high-altitude birds that require short, powerful bursts of flight to navigate vertical terrain.
