Himalayan Quail

The Himalayan Quail, scientifically known as Ophrysia superciliosa, is one of the most enigmatic birds in ornithological history. Restricted to the western Himalayas, specifically in the hills of Mussoorie and Nainital, this ground-dwelling game bird was first described in the mid-19th century. Its survival became a matter of concern as early as the late 1800s due to the conversion of its scrubland habitat into farmland and heavy hunting pressure during its peak season.

The species is characterized by its distinctive rounded wings and a long, pointed tail, features that adapt it for short, sudden flights through dense, high-altitude brush. Because there have been no confirmed sightings since 1876, the bird is widely considered extinct. Ornithologists and researchers continue to study 19th-century specimens held in museum collections to understand its place within the Phasianidae family, though its exact evolutionary lineage remains a subject of ongoing academic investigation.
