Latham's Francolin

Latham's francolin (Peliperdix lathami) was formally described by the Scottish naturalist John Latham in the late 18th century, a period defined by the rapid categorization of African biodiversity. It belongs to the Phasianidae family, which includes gamebirds like pheasants and partridges, and is native to the dense tropical forests of Central and West Africa. The species was named in honor of Latham, whose extensive work in ornithology provided the foundational descriptions for many birds that were previously unknown to European taxonomy.

The bird is characterized by its distinctively rounded wings and tail, which are evolutionary adaptations suited for navigating the dense understory of its forest habitat.
