Humboldt's Sapphire

Humboldt's sapphire, or Chrysuronia humboldtii, is a species of hummingbird first described within the broader context of nineteenth-century naturalism. Named in honor of the Prussian polymath Alexander von Humboldt, this bird represents the era's fascination with cataloging the biological diversity of the Neotropics. It was identified during an age of scientific exploration where specimens were often collected for European museums to study the distinct morphological traits of Andean avian life.

The bird is characterized by its distinct, pointed wing shape and notched tail, features that have long interested ornithologists studying avian aerodynamics and flight patterns. These physiological traits were captured in the detailed hand-colored lithographs of nineteenth-century taxonomy books, where the bird’s iridescent plumage was often highlighted to showcase the brilliant coloration common to the Trochilidae family.
