Kafa White-eye

The Kafa White-eye (Zosterops kaffensis) is a distinctive passerine bird endemic to the montane forests of the Kafa region in southwestern Ethiopia. It was historically classified within the Zosteropidae family, a group known for their characteristic white rings around the eyes. The species evolved in the isolated, high-altitude ecosystems of the Ethiopian Highlands, where its rounded wings and tail became specialized adaptations for navigating the dense, tangled undergrowth of cloud forests rather than engaging in long-distance migration.

First documented during the era of intensive regional ornithological surveys in the early 20th century, the bird’s taxonomy has been the subject of ongoing scientific review. Its design—characterized by a subtle, olive-green plumage and a muted eye ring compared to its lowland relatives—reflects a classic example of island-like speciation within a fragmented mountain habitat. The bird remains a focus for conservationists studying biodiversity in the Afromontane hotspots, serving as a biological indicator of the health of the local forest canopy.
