Kai Cicadabird

The Kai Cicadabird (Edolisoma dispar) is an endemic species restricted to the Kai Islands in the Maluku province of Indonesia. First described by the German naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace in the mid-19th century, the bird reflects the complex biogeography of the Wallacea region. Its isolation on a small island chain allowed for a distinct evolutionary trajectory, resulting in morphological traits that differentiate it from other cicadabirds found throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

The bird’s design—characterized by its rounded wings and distinctively pointed tail—is an adaptation suited to the dense, forested canopy of its tropical habitat. Ornithologists often highlight this species for its understated plumage and specialized vocalizations, which have made it a subject of interest for field researchers documenting the avian biodiversity of the lesser-studied Indonesian archipelagos. It remains a notable example of narrow-range endemism within the Campephagidae family.
