Kagu

The kagu is an evolutionary outlier, classified as the sole member of the family Rhynochetidae. Endemic to the dense, humid forests of New Caledonia, this flightless bird represents a unique lineage that diverged millions of years ago, likely evolving in isolation after the island separated from the supercontinent Gondwana. It remains a subject of intense scientific interest due to its distinct morphology, characterized by its slate-grey plumage, a prominent crest, and specialized nostrils covered by protective flaps.

The species was formally described by Jules Verreaux and Marc Athanase Parfait Œillet des Murs in 1860, following its discovery by European explorers. Its visual design is defined by its rounded wing and tail shapes, which reflect its shift away from aerial locomotion toward a terrestrial life cycle. Throughout the 20th century, the kagu became a focal point for conservation biology, as it is highly vulnerable to invasive predators and habitat fragmentation, eventually becoming a national symbol of New Caledonia.
