Kilifi Weaver

The Kilifi weaver, Ploceus golandi, is a rare passerine bird species endemic to a narrow coastal strip of southeastern Kenya. It was first described in the early 20th century, emerging from the colonial-era ornithological surveys of East Africa that sought to catalog the region's unique biodiversity. The species is closely related to other weaver birds within the Ploceidae family, distinguished by its specific, restricted habitat requirements and distinct plumage.

The bird's morphology, including its characteristic broad wing shape and notched tail, reflects its evolutionary adaptation to the coastal forest and woodland ecosystems of the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest and surrounding areas. These physical traits were studied by ornithologists to differentiate it from more widespread weaver species. While it has never been a subject of human design, it remains a significant item of interest for conservationists and avian researchers documenting the delicate ecological balance of the Kenyan coast.
