Preuss's Weaver

Preuss's weaver, scientifically known as Ploceus preussi, was first described by the German ornithologist Anton Reichenow in 1892. Named after the explorer and botanist Paul Preuss, who collected specimens during his expeditions in the rainforests of West and Central Africa, the species emerged from the surge of European biological exploration in the late 19th century. Its classification reflects the broader taxonomy of the Ploceidae family, identified by its distinct physical adaptations to the dense, multi-layered forest habitats of the region.

The bird is characterized by a specific morphology suited to its environment, including broad, rounded wings that provide the necessary maneuverability for flight through dense canopy foliage. Its notched tail is a diagnostic feature used by ornithologists to distinguish it from related weaver species within its genus.
