Klages's Antwren

Klages's antwren (Myrmotherula klagesi) was scientifically described in 1947 by the ornithologist Walter Edmond Clyde Todd. It was named in honor of Samuel Klages, a collector who gathered specimens for the Carnegie Museum of Natural History throughout the Amazon basin during the early twentieth century. The species is restricted to the riverine forests of the central Amazon, specifically thriving in the dense, tangled undergrowth of seasonally flooded forests known as varzea.

The species is distinguished from its relatives by subtle plumage variations and its specific habitat requirements. Its physical morphology, characterized by rounded wings and a distinctively notched tail, reflects an evolutionary adaptation for maneuvering through the dense, low-level vegetation of its habitat. Because it resides in remote and difficult-to-access river corridors, it remains one of the more elusive antwrens for field ornithologists, and its conservation status is tied directly to the protection of these fragile, flood-prone ecosystems.
