Klages's Antbird

Klages's antbird, scientifically classified as Drymophila klagesi, is a member of the Thamnophilidae family, native to the humid forests of the Andes in northern Venezuela and Colombia. It was historically considered a subspecies of the ochre-rumped antbird until taxonomic revisions, based on both vocalizations and plumage analysis, confirmed its status as a distinct species. The bird is named in honor of Samuel M. Klages, a prolific field collector who gathered numerous specimens in South America during the early 20th century.

The species is physically characterized by its rounded wing shape and distinctively notched tail, traits typical of understory dwellers that navigate dense vegetation. These morphological adaptations facilitate agile, short-distance flight through the tangled forest floor. Ornithologists and conservationists track the species as a marker of habitat integrity, as its reliance on specific montane forest corridors makes it particularly sensitive to the encroachment of agricultural development and deforestation in its limited range.
