Klaas's Cuckoo

Klaas's Cuckoo, scientifically classified as Chrysococcyx klaas, is a small, brood-parasitic bird native to the Afrotropic realm. It was named in honor of Klaas, a Khoikhoi servant who accompanied the French explorer and naturalist François Levaillant during his travels in Southern Africa in the late 18th century. Levaillant, a prolific author and ornithologist, was struck by the bird's distinctive plumage and vocalizations, formally documenting the species in his extensive works on African ornithology.

The species is characterized by its pointed wings and relatively long, graduated tail, adaptations that facilitate its swift, agile flight through forest canopies and savannah woodlands. Its design in nature—the iridescent green upperparts in males contrasted against a stark white underside—serves as an evolutionarily refined camouflage and signaling mechanism. As a brood parasite, the bird has evolved in tandem with its hosts, primarily sunbirds and warblers, reflecting a complex biological history shaped by the selective pressures of forest ecology.
