Levaillant's Cuckoo

Levaillant's Cuckoo, scientifically classified as Clamator levaillantii, was formally described by the English ornithologist William John Swainson in 1829. Named in honor of the French explorer and naturalist François Levaillant, whose extensive travels across Southern Africa provided the first detailed accounts of the region's avian life, the species remains a subject of intrigue for its specialized breeding behaviors. It is a brood parasite, a strategy that has evolved within the cuckoo family to ensure the survival of offspring by placing eggs in the nests of other species, most notably those of various babblers.

The bird is characterized by its distinct pointed wings and an exceptionally long tail, features that serve it well in its native habitat of acacia woodlands and thickets across sub-Saharan Africa.
