Red-faced Malkoha

The Red-faced Malkoha, scientifically known as Phaenicophaeus pyrrhocephalus, is a member of the cuckoo family endemic to the humid forests of Sri Lanka. Evolutionary biology suggests this species diverged within the Southeast Asian rainforest belt, developing specialized physical characteristics suited for life in the dense forest canopy. Its broad wings provide the maneuverability necessary for traversing thick vegetation, while its exceptionally long, graduated tail functions as a rudder during flight within cluttered woodland environments.

The species was formally described in the 18th century, though it remained largely elusive to Western naturalists due to its shy temperament and preference for high canopy layers. Its distinctive appearance, characterized by a bright red patch of skin surrounding the eye and a dramatic tail, was documented by various ornithological illustrators during the colonial survey period of the 19th century. Today, the Malkoha is considered an indicator species for forest health, and its design reflects a highly specialized adaptation to the fragmented primary forests of its home range.
