MacGillivray's Prion

MacGillivray's Prion was formally described by Gregory Mathews in 1912, named in honor of the naturalist William MacGillivray. This small seabird is a member of the Pachyptila genus, characterized by its specialized bill structure designed for filter-feeding on zooplankton in the harsh conditions of the southern oceans. It is historically associated with the remote Saint Paul Island, where its specialized evolution has allowed it to thrive within a very specific sub-Antarctic ecological niche.

The taxonomy of this species has been subject to ongoing scientific discussion, as it is often considered a subspecies of the broad-billed prion. Researchers have focused on the subtle morphological distinctions in its bill and plumage to understand its divergence.
