Negros Striped-Babbler

The Negros Striped-Babbler, scientifically classified as Zosterornis nigrorum, is an endemic bird species restricted to the montane forests of Negros and Panay in the Philippines. It was formally described by the ornithologist Edward Hargitt in 1886, emerging from the era of intense biological surveys conducted across the Philippine archipelago during the late nineteenth century. These specimens were sought by naturalists aiming to document the unique biodiversity of island ecosystems, which often harbor distinct evolutionary lineages due to long-term geographic isolation.

The design of this bird is characterized by its distinct physical adaptations, including rounded wings and a slightly notched tail, which are ideal for its life within dense, high-altitude undergrowth. Its plumage, marked by notable streaking, serves as an evolutionary response to the lighting conditions of the misty, mid-to-high elevation cloud forests it inhabits.
