Negros Jungle Flycatcher

The Negros Jungle Flycatcher, scientifically classified as Vauriella albigularis, is a passerine bird endemic to the islands of Negros and Panay in the Philippines. It was historically considered a subspecies of the White-throated Jungle Flycatcher, but modern taxonomic study recognizes it as a distinct species. This categorization reflects the bird's unique evolutionary isolation within the fragmented forests of the Western Visayas, where it has adapted to specific high-altitude montane environments.

The physical characteristics of the species, including its rounded wings and notched tail, are specialized adaptations for maneuverability within dense understory vegetation. These structural traits, along with its drab olive-brown plumage and distinct throat pattern, were documented during late 19th and early 20th-century ornithological surveys of the Philippines. Because it is highly localized and threatened by habitat loss, the species remains a subject of intense conservation interest among biologists studying the biodiversity of the Sundaland and Philippine hotspots.
