Where it came from

The purple-throated mountain-gem is a species of hummingbird native to the humid highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. First described by the naturalist Osbert Salvin in 1864, it belongs to the Trochilidae family. Its evolution within the montane forest ecosystems has resulted in distinct adaptations, such as its pointed wing shape and notched tail, which facilitate the rapid, precise maneuverability required to navigate dense undergrowth while foraging for nectar.

The striking coloration of the male—specifically the iridescent purple throat patch for which it is named—is a product of sexual selection. These birds are typically found in the understory and edges of primary forests, where they maintain territories around flowering plants. Because they are highly specialized to specific microclimates in cloud forests, they are considered an important indicator species for researchers studying the impacts of habitat fragmentation and climate change in Central American ecosystems.
