Relict Gull

The Relict Gull, or Ichthyaetus relictus, was long considered a mystery of the avian world, as it was only formally described by western science in 1931 based on a single specimen. Its status as a distinct species remained the subject of significant debate among ornithologists for decades, as it was often confused with the similar-looking Pallas's gull or the brown-headed gull. It was not until the discovery of its breeding colonies in the mid-20th century that researchers were able to confirm its unique evolutionary lineage and distinct behavioral patterns.

The bird is characterized by its distinct physical features, including a slightly smaller stature than its close relatives, a notched tail, and pointed wings that aid in its maneuverability. These design traits have evolved to support its life in arid, inland salt lakes across Central Asia. Because the species is highly sensitive to habitat degradation and occupies a very specific ecological niche, it is categorized as vulnerable, making it a subject of focused conservation efforts and intense interest for researchers studying the adaptation of gulls to non-coastal environments.
