White-backed Night Heron

The White-backed Night Heron, scientifically known as Calherodius leuconotus, is a secretive, nocturnal wading bird native to sub-Saharan Africa. It was formally described by the ornithologist George Robert Gray in 1844. As a species, it is characterized by its broad wings and rounded tail, physical adaptations that favor maneuverability in the densely vegetated riparian habitats and mangrove swamps it favors. Its evolution has resulted in a shy, elusive nature, making it a challenging subject for early field naturalists who documented its existence primarily through chance sightings in secluded wetlands.
