White-backed Swallow

The white-backed swallow (Cheramoeca leucosterna) is a unique passerine bird endemic to the arid and semi-arid regions of Australia. Unlike most swallow species that build mud nests on vertical surfaces, this bird is famously fossorial, excavating its own tunnels in sandy banks or creek beds. It was first formally described by John Gould in 1841, who named it in honor of its distinctively contrasting plumage, which serves as a striking visual marker in the harsh, sun-drenched landscapes of the Australian interior.

The evolution of the white-backed swallow's morphology reflects its specific ecological niche. Its pointed wings are an adaptation for high-speed, agile flight, allowing it to navigate open terrain efficiently to capture airborne insects.
