The White-backed Woodpecker is a species of the genus Dendrocopos that has historically thrived in the mature, deciduous, and mixed forests of the Palearctic realm. Its evolutionary development was shaped by its specialization in foraging on rotting wood, which led to the species becoming an essential indicator of healthy, old-growth forest ecosystems.
