White-winged Duck

The white-winged duck, scientifically known as Asarcornis scutulata, is an ancient lineage of waterfowl historically distributed across the swampy forests of Southeast Asia and Northeast India. It was first described by the naturalist Salomon Müller in 1842, emerging from early 19th-century efforts to catalogue the avian diversity of the Dutch East Indies. Known for its distinct white wing coverts and specialized, broad wings and rounded tail, the species is evolutionary distinct, representing an inhabitant of primary tropical rainforests rather than open wetlands.

The species has long been a subject of study by conservationists who identify it as a flagship for the integrity of its native riverine forest habitats. The bird's visual profile, characterized by its dark, mottled plumage contrasted with white shoulder patches, reflects an adaptation to low-light understory environments. Despite its biological significance, it has faced critical decline due to habitat fragmentation, leading to its status as an endangered species frequently monitored by global ornithological organizations.
