White-winged Fantail

The White-winged Fantail, Rhipidura cockerelli, is a passerine bird endemic to the Solomon Islands. It was formally described by the ornithologist Edward Pierson Ramsay in 1879, named in honor of the naturalist James Cockerell who collected specimens in the region during the late 19th century. As a member of the Rhipiduridae family, its evolutionary history is rooted in the complex biogeography of the Melanesian archipelago, where island isolation has driven significant diversification among fantail species.

The bird is characterized by its distinctive morphology, featuring rounded wings and a prominent, fanned tail that serves as a key identifier within its dense forest habitat. The species exhibits a specific plumage pattern, notably the white wing-bars and tips that provide its common name. Ornithologists and evolutionary biologists study the species to better understand the divergence of island-dwelling birds, as it represents a clear adaptation to the shaded, mid-level understory environments of its native islands.
