White-winged Tern

The White-winged Tern, or Chlidonias leucopterus, is a small marsh tern that breeds across a vast expanse of Eurasia, stretching from Central Europe through to the temperate regions of Asia. It was formally described by the Dutch zoologist Coenraad Jacob Temminck in 1815. These birds are migratory by nature, typically traveling long distances to winter in parts of Africa, South Asia, and Australia, reflecting a highly adaptive life cycle tied to freshwater wetlands and marshes.

The species is distinguished by its sharp, pointed wings and a distinctively forked tail, which facilitate its agile, erratic flight patterns while foraging for insects and small fish above water surfaces. Its aesthetic during the breeding season is striking, characterized by a near-complete black body contrasted by brilliant white wings and coverts. Ornithological documentation over the last two centuries has highlighted its role as a sentinel of wetland health, often noted by researchers for its complex plumage transition into its more modest, grey-and-white non-breeding state.
