Maantieteellinen seurapeli

The Maantieteellinen seurapeli, or Geographical Board Game, emerged during the late 19th century in Finland, reflecting a period of rising national identity and an increased focus on educational reform. Designed to familiarize players with the geography, trade routes, and topography of the world, these games were crafted as sophisticated tools for both family leisure and classroom instruction, often featuring lithographic boards that showcased the prevailing cartographic knowledge of the era.

These games were typically produced by prominent Finnish publishers of the time, such as Weilin+Göös, who sought to blend moral education with accessible entertainment. The design language favored detailed illustrations of far-off locales and clear topographical maps, reflecting a Victorian-era fascination with global exploration. They were generally well-received by the educated middle class, serving as a staple of the parlor game tradition before being gradually superseded by modern mass-market board games in the early 20th century.
