Where it came from
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon was created by Awaken Realms and released in 2019 following a highly successful crowdfunding campaign. Designed by Krzysztof Piskorski and Marcin Świerkot, the game is set in a dark, reimagined Arthurian landscape where the mythical island of Avalon is slowly being consumed by a mysterious force known as the Wyrdness. The developers aimed to blend deep, narrative-driven exploration with survival mechanics, prioritizing player choice and long-term consequences over traditional dungeon-crawling systems.
The game's visual identity, characterized by its moody, grimdark aesthetic, was driven by a team of artists including Piotr Foksowicz. The design was intended to evoke a sense of decay and isolation, moving away from the conventional high-fantasy portrayals of Camelot. Upon its release, it was praised by the tabletop community for its rich prose and non-linear storytelling, though some reviewers noted the high degree of difficulty and the complex nature of its maintenance-heavy survival requirements.
