Where it came from
Published in 1988 by Waddington Galleries in London, this monograph serves as a focused retrospective on the life and work of Alfred Jensen. Jensen, a Guatemalan-born American painter, is recognized for his complex, grid-based compositions that blended scientific theories, ancient mathematical systems, and color theory. The volume was produced to accompany exhibitions of his work, documenting his transition from abstract expressionism toward the highly structured, numerical patterns that defined his mature career.
The design of the publication reflects the minimalist aesthetic favored by Waddington Galleries during the late 1980s, prioritizing high-quality reproductions of Jensen's vibrant, impasto-heavy canvases. By contextualizing his work through the lens of esoteric science and archaic cosmologies, the book helped solidify Jensen's standing among scholars and critics as an artist who bridged the gap between geometric abstraction and spiritual inquiry.
