Alfred Jensen, recent paintings

Published in 1973 by Pace Editions, this catalog accompanied the exhibition of recent paintings by Alfred Jensen, a seminal figure in the development of abstract painting. Jensen's work from this period represents the culmination of his complex theoretical explorations, which merged mathematical systems, color theory, and ancient cosmological structures. By the early 1970s, Jensen had firmly established his signature aesthetic, characterized by dense, vibrating patterns and heavy impasto that sought to visualize the numerical relationships underpinning the physical world.

The catalog serves as a vital document of the collaboration between Jensen and Pace, a gallery that played a crucial role in situating his work within the broader discourse of mid-century American abstraction. The design of the publication reflects the minimalist sensibilities of the era, providing a clean, restrained framework that allows the intricate geometric complexity of Jensen’s canvases to remain the primary focus. Upon its release, the exhibition and accompanying text were received as a testament to the artist's rigorous intellectual process and his unique ability to translate esoteric structural concepts into visceral, tactile imagery.
