Arne & Carlos' Field Guide to Knitted Birds: Over 40 Handmade Projects to Liven Up Your Roost

Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison, a creative duo based in Norway, developed this project as an extension of their long-standing focus on traditional Scandinavian textile arts. Released in 2017, the book serves as a whimsical yet structured manual for creating knitted songbirds, utilizing the authors' signature approach to blending heritage knitting patterns with contemporary, playful design elements. The project grew out of the duo's interest in creating accessible, small-scale works that allow hobbyists to experiment with complex colorwork and shaping in a manageable format.

The book is characterized by its clean, bright photography and step-by-step instructions that emphasize customization, encouraging crafters to treat the birds as miniature canvases for wool stash utilization. Design-wise, the authors sought to modernize the concept of the ornamental bird by infusing it with character and personality, moving away from purely decorative heirloom styles. Upon its release by Trafalgar Square Books, the field guide was well-received within the international fiber arts community for its charming aesthetic and the clear, encouraging instructional style that has become synonymous with the Arne & Carlos brand.
