Arno Fischer: der Garten. Ausstellung, Leonhardi-Museum Dresden, 30. M arz - 17. Juni 2007

Published by Hatje Cantz in 2007, this catalogue accompanied the exhibition of Arno Fischer’s garden photography at the Leonhardi-Museum in Dresden. Fischer, a quintessential figure in East German photography, focused his lens on the secluded, meditative spaces of gardens late in his career, diverging from his earlier, more sociopolitical documentary work. The collection captures a quiet, universal beauty, reflecting his transition toward a contemplative observation of nature.

The publication was edited by Bernd Heise, who provides context for Fischer’s aesthetic shift. The design emphasizes the stark, rhythmic composition of the photographs, which were largely taken in Fischer’s own garden and surrounding landscapes. Upon its release, the volume was noted for its restrained, elegant layout, which serves to highlight the atmospheric quality of Fischer’s black-and-white prints, solidifying his legacy as an artist who could find profound stillness in the mundane.
