Bernd & Hilla Becher at Museo Morandi

Published in 2009 by Schirmer/Mosel, this catalogue accompanied an exhibition of the same name held at the Museo Morandi in Bologna, Italy. The work captures the iconic industrial typology photographs of Bernd and Hilla Becher, a husband-and-wife team whose rigorous, systematic documentation of water towers, blast furnaces, and cooling towers transformed contemporary photography. Their work emerged from a desire to preserve the architectural remnants of the industrial age, framing these structures as anonymous sculptures characterized by a stark, objective aesthetic.

The book explores the interplay between the Bechers’ precise industrial studies and the serene, atmospheric still-life paintings of Giorgio Morandi, the museum's namesake. Curated to draw parallels between two distinct approaches to repetitive form and structural permanence, the publication offers insight into the couple’s methodology. By emphasizing consistent lighting, frontal angles, and a lack of human presence, the Bechers achieved a scientific clarity that remains a cornerstone of 20th-century conceptual photography, a legacy further cemented by their long-standing influence at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
