Where it came from
Published in 2018 by Huis Marseille, the Museum for Photography in Amsterdam, this book was created to accompany the exhibition of the same name. It serves as a focused study on the pedagogical influence of Bernd and Hilla Becher, the iconic German photography duo renowned for their systematic documentation of industrial structures. The work contextualizes the 'Becher School' by highlighting the transition from the mid-century industrial aesthetic to the diverse, subjective approaches developed by their students at the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
The publication was authored by Saskia Asser, a curator at Huis Marseille, who sought to bridge the gap between the formal rigor of the Bechers and the distinct creative trajectories of artists such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Candida Höfer. The design reflects the museum's commitment to photographic archival quality, emphasizing clear layouts that allow the breadth of the school's collective evolution to be studied in a comparative, historical light.
