Bernd Koberling

Published in 2018 by Wienand Verlag, this monograph serves as a comprehensive scholarly examination of the work of Bernd Koberling, a significant figure in contemporary German painting. The volume was curated and authored by Christian Malycha to coincide with the artist's ongoing exploration of landscape, light, and the raw, unrefined aesthetics of the natural world. It positions Koberling within the context of the New Wild Ones—the Neue Wilde movement—while highlighting his distinctive shift toward a more atmospheric and meditative engagement with the Northern European environment.

The book functions as both a retrospective and a design object, reflecting the stark, organic sensibilities often found in Koberling’s own canvases. Malycha’s text provides critical context for the artist's transition from expressive, gesture-heavy compositions to the expansive, cool-toned depictions of Iceland and other northern regions that defined his later career. Upon its release, the volume was received as an essential reference for collectors and art historians interested in the evolution of German post-war abstract expressionism and its departure from traditional figurative constraints.
