Carmen elegiacum de natali, et incarnatione Domini et Servatoris nostri Jesu Christi, Dei, et semper Virginis Mariae filii

Published in 1570 by J. Rhamba, this work by Georg Henisch, a scholar and educator from Augsburg, serves as a formal Latin elegiac poem reflecting the humanist tradition of the late Renaissance. During this period, Latin verse was frequently employed by academics to explore theological themes, and Henisch’s composition focuses on the Nativity and the Incarnation of Christ, framing religious devotion within the classical structure of elegiac couplets.

The publication arrived during an era when the Protestant Reformation had significantly shifted the focus of northern European printing houses toward didactic and devotional materials. Henisch, who was well-regarded for his linguistic contributions and pedagogical texts, crafted this piece to demonstrate both piety and classical mastery. The work stands as an example of the intersection between sixteenth-century Lutheran intellectualism and the continued reverence for Latin as a medium for serious spiritual reflection.
