Carmen Heroicum. de Augustissima Jesu Christi Nativitate scriptum & publice in Academia Jenensi

Published in 1607 by Iohannius Weidneri, the Carmen Heroicum was written by Benedict Cotta while he was associated with the Academia Jenensi, or the University of Jena. This work serves as an example of neo-Latin occasional poetry, a genre that was profoundly significant in German academic circles during the early seventeenth century. Such texts were frequently produced to commemorate religious festivities or academic milestones, reflecting the university's role as a center for humanistic learning and Lutheran theological discourse during the period.

The poem is crafted in the heroic meter, a traditional choice for epic or elevated subject matter, intended to demonstrate the author's classical education and command of Latin. As a product of the university press in Jena, it reflects the intellectual environment of a city that was then establishing itself as a major bastion of scholarship. While these ephemeral works were often printed in limited quantities for distribution among faculty and peers, the survival of this particular volume underscores the importance of institutional printing houses in preserving the literary and devotional life of the era.
