Carmen Jones

Carmen Jones is an adaptation of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, reimagined with an all-Black cast and a libretto by Oscar Hammerstein II. Originally debuting as a Broadway musical in 1943, it transformed the operatic narrative into a contemporary setting during the Second World War. The 1980 MCA Records release of the soundtrack serves as a historical document of this culturally significant production, which bridged the gap between traditional European opera and African American musical theater traditions.
