Carmen Jones

Carmen Jones originated as a 1943 Broadway musical written by Oscar Hammerstein II, which boldly reimagined Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera Carmen. Set in a Southern United States parachute factory during World War II, the work replaced the original Spanish libretto with an all-Black cast and lyrics reflecting African American vernacular of the era.
