Case of Jennie Brice

Originally serialized in 1913, The Case of Jennie Brice represents a cornerstone of Mary Roberts Rinehart’s career, establishing her as the queen of the American mystery novel. Written during the early twentieth century, the story emerged at a time when Rinehart was pioneering the 'Had-I-But-Known' school of suspense, characterized by a plucky, often relatable female protagonist caught in a web of chilling, atmospheric events. The narrative, set against the backdrop of a flooded Pittsburgh apartment house, was crafted to capitalize on the public's growing appetite for psychological tension and domestic intrigue.

Rinehart, often referred to as the American Agatha Christie, designed the novel to subvert the standard detective tropes of the era by focusing heavily on the claustrophobic anxieties of her characters. Her prose was praised for its sharp, observational quality and its ability to turn mundane domestic settings into sites of genuine terror. This particular 2015 edition serves as a modern revival of that classic voice, ensuring that the structural innovations Rinehart brought to the mystery genre—specifically her mastery of pacing and internal monologue—remain accessible to contemporary readers.
