Case of Jennie Brice

The Case of Jennie Brice was originally serialized in 1913 and remains a seminal work by Mary Roberts Rinehart, an author frequently credited with pioneering the modern mystery novel. Set in a flood-stricken Pittsburgh, the narrative utilizes the atmospheric backdrop of the rising Allegheny River to heighten the tension of a mysterious disappearance. The story is noted for its early exploration of the 'locked-room' style of investigative fiction, which solidified Rinehart’s reputation as the American counterpart to Agatha Christie.

The 2015 edition published by CreateSpace serves as an accessible reprint of this classic mystery. While the original design focused on the suspenseful pulp sensibilities of the early 20th century, modern reprints often lean into the historical significance of Rinehart’s contribution to the genre. The reception of the original work was overwhelmingly positive, establishing the 'had-I-but-known' trope that became a hallmark of Rinehart’s storytelling technique and a defining element of classic detective literature.
