Christoph Rothmanns Handbuch der Astronomie von 1589

Christoph Rothmann wrote his handbook on astronomy in 1589 while serving as the court mathematician to Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse-Kassel. This work was born from the rigorous observational traditions of the Kassel observatory, one of the most advanced centers for astronomical inquiry in late 16th-century Europe. The manuscript reflects a period of intense transition in early modern science, capturing the efforts of astronomers to reconcile traditional geocentric models with increasingly precise measurements that hinted at the burgeoning Copernican revolution.

This 2003 edition, published by Harri Deutsch, serves as a scholarly reconstruction of Rothmann's original observations and theoretical musings. The design of the publication aims to make the inaccessible Renaissance-era Latin text available to modern researchers and historians of science. It presents the technical rigor of Rothmann's calculations with academic precision, aiming to preserve the integrity of the original findings for a contemporary audience interested in the history of instrumentation and planetary theory.
